Mountain Biking
With countless kilometers of dirt roads and paths traversing a variety of terrain, Costa Rica has enough mountain
biking routes to keep a serious biker rolling for years. "Andar en bici" or cycling as it is usually referred to
by Costa Ricans is one of their favorite pastimes. No matter what corner of the country you tour through, you
will always pass a uniformed cyclist along the way. One of the main reasons for the devotion to bicycling has
been the long held tradition of the "Vuelta de Costa Rica" or Tour of Costa Rica the international race where
top cyclists compete in differents stages around the country.
Mountain Biking became popular in Costa Rica in the beginning of the 90's. Since then this ever - growing sport
draws enthusiastic fans to explore Costa Rica's world famous beauty. The sport has grown so popular among Costa
Ricans, to the point that native Andres Brenes is ranked as the number one mountain biker of the Americas. This
year he finished 15th in the World Championship in Switzerland and 10th in the World Cup.
If you are planning to visit Costa Rica and enjoy the outdoors, going on a bike tour is a great way not only to
savor some of the country's different ecosystems (Costa Rica holds almost three fourths of the ecosystems
available in the world), but also to meet friendly "ticos."
There are bike tour companies that combine the Costa Rica adventure experience with this exciting sport, either
on or off the main road. Due to Costa Rica's tremendously varied terrain, trips are available for any skill level,
from beginning to expert. Taking bicycle tours through the wilderness is an excellent way to come in close contact
with many species of birds and other animals... carrying a camera is strongly recommended! Some tour companies
even incorporate tours such as white-water rafting, sea kayaking, canopy tours and others to combine with biking
adventures.
Mountain bikes can be rented at most resort towns, and several local companies offer mountain bike tours of the
country's less visited areas, many of which are mellow enough for people who have not been on a bike for years.
