Windsurfing
No where in Central America is the sport of windsurfing better enjoyed than at Lake Arenal, Costa Rica. A
man-made lake of 75 square kms, Lake Arenal lies adjacent to Arenal Volcano and is used as a hydroelectric
dam. Lake Arenal is 24 miles long and is situated at 11 degrees latitute, and is 1,525 feet above sea level.
With 48 square miles of surface area, the average surrounding air temp: 70-80 degrees, while the water
temperature generally averages 73 degrees. The shallow, warm waters provide ideal conditions for boarders,
while the high winds are unusually stable; is very typical to sail one sail size all day. In addition, there
are several hotels which provide specialized equipment for those interested in either renting gear of taking
lessons during your visit; top of the line gear is available allowing boarders to leave their equipment at
home.
The wind speeds below are provided by the Costa Rica National Utilities, after 15+ years of wind speed averages
as measured by a professional quality weather station; located just of the lake shore. Three averages are
provided, the highest, mean and minimum you can expect at Lake Arenal.
