The Kingfisher is a 31 foot Palm Beach with full electronics, tower and outriggers.. She is the ideal fishing machine for the calm pacific waters off of Playa Carrillo. Offering ample shade and room for up to 4 anglers, she is set up for the serious fisherman as well as the novice angler.

Among the non-fishing amenities are a couple of bunks, head, teak deck, and stereo system (bring your favorite CDs!).

The tackle locker boasts a wide assortment of tackle ranging from 15 lb. Spinning outfits up to curved butt Penn International 80's. Our most utilized rods and reels are the 30 Penn International reels mounted on stand-up rods.

We fish We fish primarily bait and switch with a lot of angler participation> and find that these are the easiest outfits for the angler to handle. We have a selection of Shimano gear as well. The cockpit contains a live well> and plays host to a full size fighting chair for the " really big ones". All of our billfishing is catch and release, using circle hooks to aid in the healthy release of sails and marlin.

The Kingfisher is also experienced in working with professional film crews. We have been the film boat for two BBC specials on the blue planet (most rercent their 2006 release) for shots in Costa Rica. We have also worked with world famous underwater cinema photographer Rick Rosenthal on his soon to be released documentary on the billfish.

YOUR CAPTAIN AND CREW

Capt. Rick Ruhlow is a USCG licensed skipper who has been plying the waters of Costa Rica from Quepos to Flamingo for the past 21 years, the last 16 primarily in the Playa Carrillo to Flamingo area. Before that he had fished Mexico, The Azores, California, Florida, and Alaska professionally.

His first Mate, Orlando Lopez, has been with Rick on the Kingfisher for the past 13 years, and is a formidable captain as well. Filling in the slot as second mate is Geovanni Castrillo, who has been with the Kingfisher for the past 13 years. Together they make one of the most successful fishing teams in Costa Rica.
